Chapter 344: Savior
Chapter 344: Savior
Lian.
Rory had never expected Polly’s brother to be him.
To think that the friend she had recently made was actually the younger sister of her savior. Fate truly worked in mysterious ways.
Dressed in immaculate white robes untouched by a speck of dust, Lian approached at an unhurried pace. He looked like a night blooming flower opening quietly beneath the moonlight, ethereal and detached from the mortal world.
"Brother, why are you so late?"
The moment Polly saw him approaching, she hurried over, grabbed his arm, and practically dragged him forward.
"Rory, this is my brother, Lian."
Then she turned to him excitedly.
"Brother, this is the friend I told you about, Rory."
The dancing firelight illuminated Lian’s face with remarkable clarity. His slightly upturned eyes were long and elegant, shimmering with captivating light.
"Rory. It has been a long time."
Rory was momentarily caught off guard by his gaze, but she quickly composed herself and offered a polite smile.
"Young Master Lian. It has been a long time indeed."
"Brother, you know Rory?"
Polly stared at both of them in astonishment. Her innocent eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"Yes, we know each other."
Lian looked at Rory, his voice rich with amusement, deep and pleasing to the ear.
"She once told me about how Young Master Lian saved her years ago." Standing beside Rory, Vincent smoothly shifted his position, casually blocking Lian’s line of sight.
"We’ve always wanted the opportunity to thank Young Master Lian properly, but never found the chance. Since fate has brought us together tonight, why not sit down and join us for something to eat?"
Then he lowered his head and looked at Rory. His voice softened instantly.
"Rory, Vangar and Xarion went off to get something. Why haven’t they returned yet? I’ll keep Young Master Lian company. Why don’t you go bring them over?"
The moment they arrived, Vincent had already noticed Vangar and Xarion hiding nearby.
Since neither of them had shown themselves, he had simply pretended not to notice. It had allowed him to continue enjoying uninterrupted time alone with Rory.
But now a fox spirit had appeared.
This Lian’s eyes were practically glued to Rory’s face.
One glance was enough to tell Vincent exactly why he had come.
If Vincent remained here alone, Lian would undoubtedly find an opportunity to speak privately with Rory.
Rather than giving him that chance, he would much rather hand it to Vangar and Xarion.
Rory met Vincent’s gentle, harmless looking eyes and immediately understood everything.
She had assumed Vincent did not know Vangar and Xarion were here.
Worried that their appearance might trigger another emotional spiral, she had deliberately avoided bringing them out.
Yet it turned out he had known from the very beginning.
This scheming bird had spotted the two lovesick fools hiding in the corner the moment they arrived and had deliberately pretended otherwise.
Now that Lian had appeared, Vincent had apparently sensed a threat and decided he could not handle the situation alone.
So he generously invited reinforcements.
Rory snorted inwardly, though not a trace of it appeared on her face.
"Alright. I’ll go get them."
Truthfully, Rory thought Vincent was overthinking things.
Her feelings toward Lian consisted solely of gratitude toward the man who had once saved her life.
There was nothing romantic there.
She was already struggling to manage the men she had at home.
The thought of adding another mate was absolutely terrifying.
As Rory walked away, Lian quietly glanced at Vincent.
Vincent simply smiled back.
"Young Master Lian, please."
"Thank you."
Lian smiled and sat down gracefully.
At that moment, Polly finally understood everything.
No wonder.
When she had first called her brother and invited him to the festival, he had refused outright.
Then she casually mentioned that she had made a new friend named Rory.
Suddenly, he had changed his mind and agreed to come.
So he had come because of Rory.
Her brother liked Rory, didn’t he?
The smile he wore while looking at Rory was brighter than anything she had ever seen at home.
Most days, Lian hardly smiled at all.
But...
Polly frowned thoughtfully.
It did not seem like Rory liked her brother in that way.
The way Rory treated him was polite and distant.
A female did not look at a male she liked with such measured courtesy.
...
Meanwhile, Vangar stood nearby with a dark expression, openly complaining to Xarion.
"That fox spirit Lian should be staying on his Fox Island."
His voice dripped with irritation.
"What’s he doing here?"
"Did you see the way he was looking at Female Master?"
Vangar ground his teeth so hard it seemed they might crack.
"His eyes were practically glued to her. And that smile... he’s flirting so shamelessly. Does he have no dignity at all?"
Xarion’s expression was no better.
Leaning against the pillar, he spoke in a lifeless tone.
"I met him during the Firebird Clan Emperor’s birthday banquet. Female Master told us he saved her life."
The last time Lian appeared, all of them had felt a sense of crisis.
But after the birthday banquet ended, the fox had made no further moves.
Xarion had assumed the matter was over.
Who would have thought they would run into him again here?
And the way Lian looked at their Female Master...
It was practically written across his face.
The two were still grumbling when they suddenly noticed Rory walking toward them.
"Why is Female Master coming over here?"
Xarion immediately straightened from his lazy posture.
"Is she coming to see us?"
Before either of them could speculate further, Rory lifted her hand and waved.
"Xarion, Vangar, come here."
Their eyes lit up instantly.
Female Master really had come for them.
The moment they heard her call, both men hurried over.
Seeing them approach, Rory smiled.
"Come on. Let’s go eat barbecue together."
"Can we join you?"
Both Vangar and Xarion looked pleasantly surprised.
"Vincent agreed?"
Wouldn’t that upset him?
No matter how much they threatened to beat Vincent up, they were still family.
Deep down, they genuinely cared about his condition.
"He’s the one who told me to come get you." Rory explained.
Vangar and Xarion instinctively looked toward Vincent.
The moment they spotted Lian seated beside him, everything became crystal clear.
So that was it.
The bird wanted reinforcements.
At least he still knew the difference between family and outsiders.
"Well then, Female Master, let’s head over."
Xarion immediately grabbed Rory’s hand.
"That’s right. Let’s go now."
Vangar glanced toward Lian in the distance, his eyes gleaming with anticipation.
At this moment, excitement was not the only thing shining in their eyes.
There was also the unmistakable calculation reserved for romantic rivals.
Rory looked at the two of them and rubbed her forehead helplessly.
"Stop imagining things."
She pointed a warning finger at them.
"I have no romantic feelings for Lian. He saved my life. Be polite to him."
After all, he was her savior.
They could not genuinely make things difficult for him.
"Don’t worry, Female Master."
Vangar immediately raised a hand.
"We know he saved you. We definitely won’t make things difficult for him."
Xarion nodded vigorously beside him.
The two looked so sincere that they practically seemed ready to swear before the Beast God.
Only then did Rory finally nod in satisfaction and lead them back.
When they returned to the bonfire, Polly immediately stood up.
"Rory, the meat on my side is ready. Sit here with me."
The seat she was offering happened to be directly beside Lian.
The poor girl was clearly doing everything possible to help her brother.
Before Rory could even respond, Vincent spoke.
"Rory, the meat on my side is ready too. You should sit here instead."
Rory immediately nodded.
"Polly, I’ll sit with Vincent. You don’t have to give up your seat. Sit down."
"I’m sitting beside Female Master."
Vangar moved faster than anyone else.
Vincent was seated on Rory’s right, and Vangar instantly claimed the seat on her left.
This bastard really was quick.
Xarion clicked his tongue and reluctantly settled down beside Vangar.
Then he lifted his gaze and looked directly at Lian, who sat opposite him.
The atmosphere around the bonfire suddenly became far more interesting.
